“The origins of the Charleston Etchers’ Club have been traced to the visits of artists from away to the studio of Alice Ravenel Huger Smith. Helen Hyde visited in 1916 and Bertha Jacques came in 1917 in connection with their own work.  Smith was encouraged by them to continue her exploration of Japanese prints and Hyde who had studied in Japan made application suggestions and helped with acquiring supplies.  Jacques who’s was with the Chicago Society of Etchers included both Smith and Elizabeth O’Neill Verner’s work in shows in the Midwest.  Ellen Day Hale and Gabrielle Clements visited Charleston in place of Europe due to the war there.   Elizabeth Hamilton, Verner’s daughter, tells teh story of Hale and Clements telling Smith to get a group together to buy a press and we will show you how to use it and the materials necessary and then you can teach the others. The group was small, nine founders, mostly female.”

Thank you for your interest – we do not meet regularly. The plan is three events a year and we are a bit behind.
